Patient Account Specialist

The Patient Account Specialist is responsible for maintaining and understanding accounts receivable (A/R) status of all patient self-pay accounts. Responding to incoming patient calls, handling credit card payments, account disputes, balance research, outbound calls and payment plan set up. The Patient Account Specialist follows the guidelines and regulations set by federal, state, and local standards. The Patient Account Specialist assists patients with account balance research, reviewing explanation of benefits (EOB) and completing adjustments. This position provides the foundation needed to work in an Accounts Receivable Department.

Essential Functions:

  1. Accurately interprets Explanation of Benefits (EOB) documents to confirm patient responsibility.
  2. Communicates with patients by phone and responds to billing inquiries generated from patient statements in a timely manner.
  3. Accurately processes payments via credit card or guides patients through the online payment portal.
  4. Creates appropriate payment plans for patients.
  5. Allocates coinsurance and deductibles accurately within electronic system.
  6. Reviews and handles incoming and returned mail correspondence.
  7. Communicates effectively and professionally with patients, physicians, management, coworkers, and others.
  8. Maintains strict confidentiality of patient personal information and maintains HIPAA Compliance.
  9. Contributes to the success of the department by ensuring accurate patient billing, demonstrating strong teamwork skills, and striving for continual improvement.
  10. Performs additional tasks, duties and projects as assigned.

Position Type, Expected Hours of Work & Travel:

This is a full-time, on-site (Beverly, MA or Franklin, TN), or remote position. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 AM-5 PM or 9 AM-6 PM CST or EST. Hours of work are based on regions supported. Travel is not expected with this position.
