NYGC's Summer Internship Program is designed to provide students hands-on mentorship from an assigned mentor in one of our research labs, support groups or administrative departments. You will gain exposure to Genomics and the research that we do, as well as have the opportunity to interact and collaborate with top genomic researchers. In addition, NYGC interns will be able to attend and participate in a wide variety of other events scheduled specially for our Summer Intern group, including weekly workshops, presentations, career panels, social events and much more. The expected duration of the internship is June 5, 2023 - July 28, 2023.

The New York Genome Center is looking for highly motivated individuals to spend the summer as part of the bioinformatics group at the New York Genome Center. This is an opportunity to learn more about the field of bioinformatics and work closely with the members of the bioinformatics and computational biology group.

Example summer projects may include:

• Implementing new modules and algorithms for the analysis of sequencing data (sequence alignment, sequence assembly, and variant calling);
• Benchmarking new bioinformatics tools and help integrating them into the NYGC bioinformatics pipelines;
• Coding standalone tools or small pipelines/workflows to perform analysis of sequencing data;
• Analyzing a sequencing dataset and summarizing and visualizing results;
• Analyze error models of last generation sequencing technologies (e.g., oxford nanopore, single-cell RNA, etc.).

All interns will be expected to present the results of their projects to the NYGC community at the end of the summer. Interns may be expected to report to NYGC offices in person.

Eligibility requirements

• Undergraduate student in a related course of study
• Available to work full-time on their project for the duration of the internship

• Undergraduate students with a strong interest in a scientific or non-profit organization
• Students from groups traditionally underrepresented in STEM fields, including students who identify as African American, Hispanic American, Latinx, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders, members of economically disadvantaged families and disabled persons.

Stipend

Interns will earn an $8,000 stipend for their participation in the program.

Flexible Work

NYGC has established a flexible work policy to give employees and other staff more ability to balance their work, personal commitments, and commuting challenges. The incumbent in this position is eligible for a flexible work schedule or hybrid remote work arrangement with supervisory approval. At minimum, interns will be required to be onsite at the New York Genome Center for all weekly intern events (e.g. scientific and social events), which will occur once or twice per week.

About the New York Genome Center

The New York Genome Center (NYGC) is an independent, nonprofit, academic research organization dedicated to advancing genomic research. NYGC scientists and staff are furthering new approaches to diagnosing and treating neurological diseases and cancer through their unique capabilities in whole genome sequencing, RNA sequencing, state-of-the art analytics, and the development of genomic tools. NYGC concentrates specifically on disease-based research in the following areas: neuropsychiatric disease (autism, schizophrenia, bipolar); neurodegenerative disease (ALS, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's), and cancer.

Located in Lower Manhattan, the New York Genome Center was founded by and remains closely affiliated with the leading academic medical centers and research universities in the New York region, engaging in research projects with and for these institutions. Essential to our collaborative work is an outstanding faculty, whose members typically hold a joint appointment at NYGC and a partner university.
